Growing up I had no idea just how important it is to wear a facial SPF every single day, even in the UK, even if it's cloudy! I used to think just having SPF in my foundation is enough, but it’s not enough as it isn’t spread all over your face evenly. You should be applying an SPF every single day, 30 minutes before you go outside, underneath your make up. Not only does it protect us from skin ageing, but it protects us from skin cancer too. I wanted to talk about the best sun creams particularly for the face as many are different to those for the body. I find facial SPFs are great as they don't make my skin itch, sore or dry and they don't clog my pores making me break out. I hope you enjoy this blog post, the best facial or face SPFs and sun creams to buy.

Why do I need an SPF for my face?

- A good quality SPF will protect your skin from harmful rays
- Too much sun can cause skin damage
- UV rays can cause premature ageing
- SPF can help reverse signs of damage by reducing dark spots
- Often formulated different than those for the body
- Many are great for sensitive skin
- UVA rays penetrate deep into the thickest layer of the skin
- UVB rays can burn the superficial layers of your skin
- Sunburn can cause hyper-pigmentation and even DNA damage at a cellular level

Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF50 - I have to start with Kiehls because I've been using their brand for the longest time and so many of their products are kind to the skin, whilst being scientifically EPIC too so I trust their products. I was so excited when I first ever got my hands on Kiehl's SPF. I think we all know HOW important SPF is for every single day, even in winter, not only does it help stop premature ageing, it also helps protect against skin cancer. I find a lot of suncreams can clog my pores and feel really heavy but as it says in the name, this is ultra light. It is a non-comedogenic formula which is probably why it doesn’t make me break out - super important because I used to struggle really badly with suncreams making me break out in spots - as well as this, it is suitable for sensitive skin and I find a lot of suncreams actually irritate sensitive skin so this is a total bonus. Kiehls Ultra Light Daily UV Defense sinks straight into the skin and is perfect to apply after your morning skincare routine but it keeps my skin nice and moisturised through the day too, so there's that additional bonus, it's an SPF with skincare qualities. I layer my skincare up. Even on no make up days, if I am going outside I will ensure I apply a.n SPF. This is broad spectrum SPF 50 PA ++++ and I look for that in my facial skincare, it means it protects against UVA and UVB which is really important to look out for in a suncream plus it helps defend against UV rays and pollution too (important when living in a busy city!) This basically does it all: protects you from BOTH UVA and UVB, keeps the skin hydrated, doesn't make you break out, doesn't irritate the skin AND protects from pollution too. Sign me up forever please. P.S, if you are looking for a 100% mineral suncream, for sensitive and problem skin, you may want too check out Kiehl's Mineral Suncream too. Shop Kiehl's Ultra Light Daily UV Defense SPF50. Don't miss: What to buy from Kiehl's!

Skinceuticals Advanced Brightening UV Defense SPF 50 - I adore everything about Skinceuticals, ever since going for a facial at one of their clinics. My skin was analysed for sun damage, pigmentation and pretty much everything. I trust Skinceuticals, I feel like they are the creme de la creme of skincare - their dual-action, lightweight suncream doesn’t make me break out, it’s SPF 50 meaning it protects the skin from UV induced discolouration AND it helps even the skin tone too. It’s important products are UVA and UVB too, so they stop ageing AND burning. Skin ceuticals are so highly regarded in the skincare world, this goes above and beyond normal suncream as it has potent ingredients within it too, 1% Tranexamic Acid and 2% Niacinamide to help brighten overall skin tone, so it’s protecting you from sun damage but actually working with your skin too every time you wear it. Shop Skinceuticals Advanced Brightening UV Defense SPF 50

Ren Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30 - Ren skincare is one of the nicest brands, ever. They do SO much for the planet so you know if you buy their products, they're very clean and eco-friendly. Ren’s mattifying face sunscreen has broad spectrum UVA/UVB, as well as blue light protection and it’s made with naturally derived ingredients, it’s also vegan. I love it because it doesn't make my skin oily whatsoever. It's a silicone free mineral sunscreen and it took six years of research so the brand could find an SPF that’s good for the skin AND clean to the planet too which is so so important. Everyone knows that sun cream can make your skin very shiny and also make you break out but this is no shine and good for sensitive skin too! Shop Ren Clean Screen Mineral SPF and online here.

La Roche Posay Anthelios Shaka Ultra Light Facial Sun Cream SPF50 - Okay this is one of the best face suncreams and it's affordable too. It's specially formulated to protect sensitive skin, it's almost like water it's so lightweight too. It provides broad spectrum SPF 50 and they also use a patented filtering system and La Roche Thermal Spring water. This isn't greasy at all and just slides on like a tinted water. It is also sweat, sand and water resistant so good for running! Side note: I also love the invisible spray for throwing in my handbag and I spray it on my scalp or my ears as my scalp burns bad or the SPF stick for ears, nose and elbows etc. Shop La Roche Posay Anthelios Shaka Ultra Light Facial Sun Cream SPF50.

Elizabeth Arden SPF 50 - I trialled and tested this in Barcelona and just like all other Elizabeth Arden products, it's exceptional. It's SPF 50 and shields against harmful UVA/UVB rays that can cause sunburn, surface skin cell damage and premature signs of ageing. It's oil free and lightweight so it doesn't clog the pores and is kind to the skin. It also hydrates the skin using Arden's famous Eight Hour formula too. I think £26 is very good for 50ml of a premium, skincare brand product. Side note, I also love their targeted sun defence stick for touch ups on the go. Shop Elizabeth Arden SPF 50

Caudalie Anti-wrinkle Face Sun Care Lotion SPF 50 - I swear by Caudalie Oil sprays in the Summer and used them on so many trips last year, so you can definitely count on their face care, particularly because they do such good skincare anyway. Caudalie's SPF 50 shields your skin from UV induced ageing, it's water resistant and very light, not sticky at all but offers max protection. So what makes this different from the others? Caudalie suncream uses a highly biodegradeable and non-toxic formula that’s equally protective for the skin and marine ecosystem. I love this about Caudalie, they were one of the first I saw to do this. The product also uses Caudalie's famous Grape Water - scientifically, it intercepts environmental stressors preventing photo-damage and development of premature signs of ageing. This smells like holidays and feels like a holiday in a bottle, plus, it's super hydrating too! It's really good for sensitive skin and is non comedogenic so it wont make you break out. In true Caudalie style, it's free from parabens, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, mineral oils, alcohol, silicones or animal-derived ingredients. I'm impressed with how affordable the 25ml one is! Shop Caudalie sun cream.

Decleor Face Suncream SPF 50 - Decleor do some of the best skin products so I couldn't not talk about their suncream. This is a targeted sincere range which will help maintain smooth, even and bright skin at the same time as protecting from the sun. It includes pharmaceutical-grade essential oils and innovative science within it and is designed to moisturise the skin too, whilst protecting from UVA and UVB rays. It also uses Aloe Vera and Sesame oil to nourish and soothe skin. Shop Decleor Face Suncream SPF 50.

Vichy Ideal Soleil Face and Body Sun Protection Milk SPF 30 - It's no secret that I love Vichy and have done for years. Now this isn't my daily go to as I prefer to use Kiehls or Skin Ceuticals because they are specifically formulated for the face, but, if you like a milky product, this is lovely. It protects against UVA and UVB, maximum protection and I find it blends into the skin so well. It also contains Vichy Mineralizing Thermal Water for a soothing effect. Free from parabens and fragrance. Shop Vichy Ideal Soleil Face and Body Sun Protection Milk SPF 30

Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30 - This is one of the only SPF 30s on the list but I do love Drunk Elephant so needed to mention this. Drunk Elephant SPF provides antioxidant and broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection. It's aa non-sticky sunscreen formulated with skincare benefits too, so if helps with a youthful looking complexion whilst it's protecting from the sun. Ingredients include antioxidants such as grape juice, sunflower shoot extract and asparanin to shield the skin from environmental stresses. It also has marula and raspberry seed oils also to hydrate the skin but also to help reduce the appearance of fine lines. This sinks in nice and quickly too. Shop Drunk Elephant Umbra Sheer Physical Daily Defense SPF 30.

Clinique SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen - I always pack a Clinique suncream in my bag with me when abroad! Mineral enriched, high SPF and very light weight! This particular one is 100% minerals, I find it's so comfortable to wear and really kind to my skin, even on sensitive days. It uses an invisible shield meaning it's invisible on all skin tones so it wont ruin your make up, it's also oil free.  Shop Clinique SPF 50 Mineral Sunscreen

Elemis Daily Defence Shield - Last but not least, the first proper SPF I used on my face! Elemis! This one defends, protects and hydrates too, it is the perfect priming base for make up. It protects against environmental factors and UV rays, pollution and light too, meaning it's great to wear even on cloudy days in the city! I know so many people who swear by this, it doesn't feel greasy at all but adds a good amount of moisture, it just sits so well under make up. Shop Elemis Daily Defence Shield

I have to add a note in about the Shiseido Invisible Protective Mist - I just used this today and it's incredible, it's not white so no marks anywhere, within seconds it comes out in a light, invisible spray and is lightweight all over the body, great for outdoor workouts too plus it's factor 50. It's designed for sport but is kind enough for the face and the body. Highly rate this!
