Affiliate throughout: If you’d told me a year ago that I’d become emotionally attached to a screen-less fitness band that quietly judged my sleep, stress, recovery and late nights, I probably wouldn’t have believed you.
And yet here we are.
After wearing WHOOP for a full year through travel days, workouts, long walks, strength sessions, busy work weeks, holidays, flights, weddings, poor sleep, great sleep and those “why am I exhausted when I thought I felt fine?” moments, I genuinely feel like it has changed how I think about health and has been hugely helpful to me in so many ways.
Ever thought of getting a whoop well today I'm writing a review of the WHOOP. You're probably wondering if a WHOOP is worth it. This is my full WHOOP one-year review, everything I’ve loved, what surprised me, what I’m not convinced by, whether it’s worth the money and all the questions people ask online.
If you’re thinking of buying a WHOOP, the great news is I have a WHOOP band promo / discount code EMSHELDON. Click below for your discount:

What Is WHOOP?
WHOOP is a screen-free wearable designed around recovery, strain and sleep rather than steps and notifications.
Unlike a traditional smartwatch, it isn’t trying to replace your phone. It quietly sits in the background collecting data 24/7 and then turns that into actionable insights.
WHOOP was founded in 2012 by Will Ahmed while he was a student athlete at Harvard. The idea came from wanting better performance data that elite athletes could actually use. Today it’s used by professional athletes, fitness enthusiasts and increasingly people who simply want to understand their bodies better.
Its core system revolves around:
- Recovery score
- Daily strain
- Sleep performance
- Heart rate variability (HRV)
- Resting heart rate
- Stress monitoring
- Hormonal insights
- Coaching tools
- Activity tracking and recovery recommendations
My First Impressions When I Started Using WHOOP
I remember opening it and thinking 'Where's the screen?'
That’s the point though.
WHOOP deliberately removes the distraction element. No texts. No social notifications. No endless wrist checking.
At first it felt strange.
Now I actually love it.
I wear mine constantly and forget it’s there.
The biggest surprise for me hasn't been fitness tracking, it's been sleep awareness.
I thought I slept reasonably well.
WHOOP politely informed me that apparently I did not.
What has WHOOP helped me change over the year?
1. I'm so much more protective of my sleep
This is probably the single biggest change.
WHOOP started showing patterns I never really noticed:
- Late meals
- Travel fatigue
- Alcohol impact
- Inconsistent bedtimes
- Busy social periods
- Recovery dips after intense weeks
The visual feedback was hard to ignore.
I've re-trained my mind set and stopped thinking, I'm tired but I'll just push through and instead I now ask am I recovered enough?
2. I Train Smarter
Before WHOOP I’d often judge workouts by effort alone.
Now I look at:
- Recovery
- Strain targets
- Sleep debt
- HR trends
Some days it tells me:
Push harder.
Other days:
Take it easier, don't pretend you’re invincible today.
It's this sort of balance that has probably helped me more than the workouts themselves.
3. Travel Became Easier To Understand
As someone who travels quite a lot, this was fascinating.
Flights, hotel beds, time changes, early starts and busy itineraries all showed up.
Sometimes I felt fine and recovery was awful.
Sometimes I expected disaster and recovered brilliantly.
It helped remove guesswork.
WHOOP One Year Pros & Cons
What I Love
✔ Incredible sleep insights
✔ Recovery tracking feels genuinely useful
✔ Comfortable enough to wear continuously
✔ Battery charging without removing the band
✔ No distracting screen
✔ Excellent long-term trend data
✔ Great for women tracking cycles and energy patterns
Things I Don’t Love
✘ Subscription model isn’t for everyone
✘ Data can feel overwhelming initially, but that becomes a plus later on and I love it now
✘ No screen if you like instant stats
✘ You may become slightly obsessed with recovery scores
And yes… there were mornings where I opened the app hoping for green recovery and got personally humbled.
Is WHOOP better than Apple Watch?
They do different jobs.
For me:
Apple Watch = lifestyle device
WHOOP = performance and recovery coach
If you want notifications, calls and apps then you will get that from an Apple Watch.
If you want sleep, readiness and recovery depth it's WHOOP all the way.
Some people wear both and that's absolutely fine.
Is WHOOP worth it?
After a year?
For me: yes, not because it made me fitter overnight but because it changed my behaviours through giving me proof of how things are going. I sleep more intentionally, I understand recovery better, I notice patters sooner and all of this has real value in my never ending wellbeing plight.
Does WHOOP track steps?
Yes.
WHOOP now includes step tracking alongside its recovery and strain tools.
Does WHOOP work for women?
Absolutely.
This was one of the features I was curious about.
WHOOP includes women’s hormonal insights and cycle tracking features designed to help interpret recovery changes across different phases.
I actually think this is one of the most underrated parts of it.
Sometimes the answer isn’t that I'm underperforming, it's that my body is doing what it should be doing given where I am in my cycle and WHOOP has helped me understand this.
Can you wear WHOOP all the time?
Yes.
I wear mine:
- Sleeping
- Training
- Walking
- Travelling
- Working
The battery slides on while you’re wearing it which is still one of my favourite features.
Does WHOOP track calories?
Yes, it does. I personally don’t use it but it does.
I’m far more interested in:
- Recovery
- Sleep need
- Training load
- Long-term trends
That’s where WHOOP shines.
Does WHOOP help with weight loss?
Indirectly, yes.
It doesn’t magically create fat loss.
But:
Better sleep → better recovery → more consistent training → often better decisions.
That ripple effect matters.
Is WHOOP accurate?
No wearable is perfect.
I treat WHOOP less as this number is the absolute truth versus what trend am I learning from this. The trends have been incredibly useful.
Can WHOOP replace a smartwatch?
For some people yes.
For me?
No.
I still like having other devices for lifestyle use.
WHOOP sits in a different category and stands out for me in that category.
Does WHOOP work if you don’t exercise?
Yes.
Actually this surprises people.
If you:
- want better sleep
- feel burnt out
- travel often
- manage stress
- want recovery insights
WHOOP still has value.
It isn’t only for athletes.
What’s the best thing about WHOOP after a year?
The awareness that the data gives you. Once you understand what helps or hurts your recovery, you no longer need to guess and can act in your body's own best interests.

Final Thoughts: Would I Still Choose WHOOP After A Year?
Yes I would and I say this as someone who has now lived with it through an entire year of real life rather than perfect fitness conditions.
It has seen:
The good sleeps.
The terrible sleeps.
Travel days.
Celebrations.
Training wins.
Recovery disasters.
Busy weeks.
Quiet weeks.
And somehow it still manages to teach me something.
WHOOP was originally built to help athletes understand performance, but I think its real strength is helping ordinary people understand themselves a little better. After a year, that’s the reason it’s still on my wrist. And the good news? Remember, if you want to try it, I have a discount code to make it easy so just click Em's Discount Code to get started.
