Holiday Packing Essentials: My Carry-On Packing List for a Stylish Summer Getaway

Very Cabin Bag

Advertorial: There are two types of holiday packers. Those who start laying outfits out weeks in advance... and those who throw everything into a suitcase the night before and somehow hope for the best.

I used to be firmly in the second camp.

After far too many trips where I'd packed six pairs of shoes, three handbags and still managed to forget something essential, I've finally learnt that travelling light doesn't have to mean compromising on style.

Whether you're heading off for a long weekend in Europe, a beach escape or a city break, I've found that a carefully planned cabin bag can actually make travelling so much easier. No waiting at baggage reclaim, no hefty luggage fees and no dragging an oversized suitcase through cobbled streets.

This summer I've been picking up a few holiday pieces from Very, and it's reminded me just how easy it is to build an entire holiday wardrobe around a few versatile staples.

Very Co-ord outfit

Start With One Great Co-Ord

If there's one item that deserves space in every holiday suitcase, it's a co-ord.

Matching sets have become my favourite travel essential because they instantly look polished while taking all the guesswork out of getting dressed.

Whether you choose a linen shorts set, lightweight trousers with a matching top or a floaty skirt and blouse, a stylish co-ord set can work so much harder than you might expect.

During the day I love wearing the full outfit with flat sandals, oversized sunglasses and a woven beach bag for sightseeing or lunch by the sea.

Come evening, a quick swap to metallic sandals, statement earrings and a blazer completely transforms the same outfit for cocktails or dinner.

Even better, each piece works beautifully on its own.

The top pairs perfectly with denim shorts.

The trousers work with a simple white vest.

The skirt can be worn with a linen shirt.

Suddenly you've created five or six outfits from what initially looked like just one.

It's one of the easiest ways to pack less while still feeling like you have plenty of options.

Choosing the Right Cabin Bag

I've become a huge fan of travelling with hand luggage only.

A good cabin bag makes all the difference, especially if you're flying for just a few days.

The key is choosing something that's lightweight, structured enough to protect your belongings and roomy enough to maximise every inch of available space.

I also look for multiple compartments so that passports, chargers and travel documents are always easy to reach without unpacking everything at airport security.

My Holiday Packing Essentials

When I'm travelling with only hand luggage, every item has to earn its place.

My packing list usually includes:

  • One versatile co-ord
  • Two lightweight dresses
  • Denim shorts
  • White linen shirt
  • Swimwear
  • Lightweight knit for cooler evenings
  • Comfortable trainers
  • Flat sandals
  • Evening sandals
  • Sunglasses
  • Everyday jewellery
  • SPF and skincare favourites
  • Makeup essentials
  • Portable charger
  • Kindle
  • Reusable water bottle

Everything works together so I can create multiple outfits without overpacking.

My Favourite Packing Hacks

I've picked up a few packing tricks over the years that genuinely save space.

Roll, Don't Fold:

Rolling clothes not only saves room but also helps reduce creases, especially with lightweight fabrics.

Packing Cubes Are Worth It:

Packing cubes keep everything organised and make it so much easier to find what you're looking for without turning your suitcase upside down (ones with windows in work better for me).

Wear Your Bulkiest Pieces:

If you're travelling in trainers or a jacket, wear them rather than packing them.

Every little bit of space counts.

Very Co-ord

Stick to One Colour Palette:

Neutrals are my best friend when packing.

Cream, black, white, beige and soft khaki all mix effortlessly, allowing almost every item to work together.

Limit Shoes:

Shoes take up more room than almost anything else.

Three pairs is usually my limit:

  • Trainers
  • Flat sandals
  • Evening sandals

Anything more rarely gets worn.

Holiday Style Doesn't Need a Huge Suitcase:

I've realised that packing smarter actually makes holidays more enjoyable.

Instead of spending ages deciding what to wear, everything in my bag works together. Getting dressed becomes effortless, leaving more time to enjoy exploring somewhere new.

A versatile co-ord, a practical cabin bag and a few carefully chosen accessories are all you really need for a stylish getaway.

If you're still shopping for your summer wardrobe, Very has everything from holiday fashion to luggage and travel accessories in one place, making it easy to find pieces that work whether you're planning a beach holiday, a city break or even a UK staycation.

Sometimes less really is more, especially when it means breezing straight through the airport with nothing more than a perfectly packed carry-on.

Lots of love, Em x
