prev ad partner -Hey my loves! Today I’m sharing something a little different but super important. My experience of going for an eye test at Vision Express. If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably spent a lot more time on screens over the last few years and this includes laptops, phones, late-night TikTok scrolling (oops). I'm forever trying to reduce my screen time but we live in such an on-line world, let's be realistic, this isn't going to happen.
I've worn glasses and contact lenses for as long as I remember and last year I had a very bad scare with one of my eyes. I had been plagued with those reminders to go and have my eyes checked after my last 2 year appointment and I finally did the adult thing and booked myself in for an eye check-up. And I’m so glad I did!
If you’ve been putting it off or you’re just curious about what actually happens at an eye test, this one’s for you. Let’s chat about what to expect, why it’s worth it, and why I’ll definitely be doing as I'm told and going for my 2 yearly check up.

If you haven’t heard of Vision Express, let me give you a quick intro. They’ve been around since 1988 so they have over 35 years of eye care expertise, which was definitely a factor in my mum's decision to take me and my brother when we were small. We've been with them a very long time and always had great service.
With over 550 stores across the UK, they’ve become one of the most trusted names in opticians. Whether you’re just looking for a check-up or need new glasses, they offer everything from eye tests to prescription sunglasses to stylish designer frames. They have lots of expertise in each store.
Why do eye tests matter?
Let’s be honest, most of us wait until something feels wrong to book an appointment. But actually, eye tests are about so much more than just getting new glasses.
They can pick up early signs of health conditions like:
High blood pressure
Diabetes
Glaucoma
Macular degeneration
Crazy, right? Your eyes can say so much about your overall health. Vision Express recommends getting a check-up every two years and sooner if anything changes.
So even if your vision seems okay, it’s definitely worth doing for peace of mind.
How do I book an eye appointment?
I booked mine through the Vision Express website, and it literally took 2 minutes. You just pop in your postcode, choose a store near you, pick a date and time, and boom, confirmed. Super simple.
If online isn’t your thing, you can always call or just walk into your local store, they’re really accommodating.

The Eye Test – What Actually Happens?
I turned up about 10 minutes early and was greeted by the friendliest team. The store felt modern and bright, not clinical or intimidating at all.
The eye test itself is in two parts:
Part 1: Pre-tests
This is done by an optical assistant and includes:
That little puff of air test (glaucoma screening, not painful, I promise!)
A focus test with a machine that shows a little hot air balloon
Digital photography of the back of the eye (so high-tech, I loved seeing the images!)
Part 2: The Full Eye Exam
Then I saw the optometrist, who was honestly amazing. So calm, professional, and explained everything as we went. We did:
The classic letter chart
Near and distance vision tests
Eye movement coordination tests
A full health check of the eyes
It took about 30–40 minutes total, and I never felt rushed or unsure about what was happening. Lots of questions are asked about your overall health, your job etc all to ascertain what could impact your overall eye health.
Choosing Glasses – The Fun Bit!
Once the test was done, I got a my prescription, which had worsened slightly from last time, then it was time to choose frames.
Vision Express has so many to pick from from basic ones to Ray-Ban, Prada, Oakley, Versace, and loads more. I was honestly spoiled for choice. One of the staff helped me narrow it down and even suggested adding blue light protection to the lenses which has been a game-changer for all my screen time.
Would I use Vision Express again?
100% yes. I felt completely looked after from start to finish, and I left not only with a cute new pair of glasses, but also with peace of mind about my eye health.
The team were lovely, the process was smooth, and I actually learned quite a bit about my eyes. I’ll definitely be keeping up with regular eye tests from now on, especially knowing how much they can reveal about my health.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been putting off your eye test, this is your gentle nudge to book it in. Whether it’s been two years or ten (no judgement here!), you’ll feel so much better for getting checked.
Let me know if you’ve had your eyes tested recently or if you’re planning to – I’d love to hear how you got on!
Lots of love
Em xx
