And not just any toothbrush.
I was recently invited to Paris for the launch of the brand-new Dyson CameraJet™ electric toothbrush, and I have to say, this is one of those launches where you walk away thinking how on earth did nobody think of this before?
Because Dyson hasn't simply created another electric toothbrush.
They've looked at the bits of brushing that we all know we should be doing better, particularly cleaning between our teeth, and completely re-engineered the experience.
The Dyson CameraJet has a built-in camera, AI-powered gap detection, sonic brushing and a precision mouth-rinse jet, all working together while you brush.
And yes, I actually got to meet James Dyson himself at the launch in Paris, which was pretty special.
I've always been in awe of Dyson because they don't seem to accept that something has to work the way it has always worked. They take something incredibly ordinary, a vacuum cleaner, a hairdryer, a fan… and now a toothbrush and ask could we make this better?
So, after seeing the new Dyson toothbrush in action, I'm here to tell you everything you need to know.

Meet the Dyson CameraJet Toothbrush
Let's start with the obvious question…
What actually is the Dyson CameraJet?
The Dyson CameraJet is a completely new type of electric toothbrush designed to brush, identify gaps between your teeth and precision-floss while you brush.
The clever bit is the tiny camera inside the brush head.
The 100,000-pixel macro lens camera captures 28 images every second and uses Dyson's machine-learning technology, called Gap Optical Targeting™, to identify the spaces between your teeth.
When it detects a gap, the toothbrush can fire a tiny, targeted burst of mouth rinse directly into that space.
So you're brushing your teeth while the toothbrush is effectively looking at your mouth and working out where the gaps are.
Honestly, seeing it demonstrated in Paris was one of those wow moments.
Dyson says the technology has been developed over six years, with the company using 16 million lines of code and machine learning trained on 470,000 dental images.
And this is where it becomes much more than a fancy electric toothbrush.
A little bit about Dyson and meeting James Dyson
I've written about Dyson quite a few times on EmTalks because I'm genuinely a huge fan of the brand.
Dyson was founded by Sir James Dyson, the British inventor and entrepreneur who completely changed the way we think about household appliances.
And one of the things I find most fascinating about Dyson is that the company is built around engineering problems rather than simply following what everyone else is doing.
The original bagless vacuum cleaner challenged the traditional idea that vacuum cleaners needed bags. Dyson then moved into air treatment, haircare and beauty with products such as the Supersonic and Airwrap.
And now we're standing in Paris talking about a toothbrush with a camera!
But the thing that made this particular launch extra special was seeing James Dyson himself presenting the CameraJet.
He spoke about the problem that Dyson was actually trying to solve: the fact that so many people don't properly clean between their teeth and the fact that he turned up himself just shows how passionately he advocates for his own company and his own loyal customers.
The company's research found that these interdental spaces are areas where plaque can build up, yet they're incredibly easy to miss when we're brushing. Dyson's answer was essentially: what if the toothbrush could actually see them?
Rather than adding technology just for the sake of it, the CameraJet has been designed around a very simple problem.
We miss bits of our teeth.
So Dyson built something that can find them.
How does the Dyson CameraJet toothbrush work?
This is probably the question I've been asked most since the launch.
The CameraJet combines several technologies:
1. A tiny camera
The toothbrush has a 100k-pixel macro lens camera built into the brush head.
It captures 28 images per second, allowing the system to see what's happening as you're brushing.
2. AI-powered gap detection
Dyson calls this Gap Optical Targeting™.
The machine-learning system analyses the live images and identifies the gaps between your teeth.
3. Precision mouth-rinse jets
Once the system identifies a gap, the toothbrush can release a targeted, conical burst of mouth rinse.
Dyson says the response happens within around 100 milliseconds of detecting the gap.
4. Sonic brushing
At the same time, you're getting the actual brushing action.
Dyson has developed variable sonic oscillation, designed to keep the bristles moving rather than allowing them to stall against the tooth surface.
5. The MyDyson app
The toothbrush connects to the MyDyson app, where you can see live images of your teeth and receive guidance on your brushing technique. This by the way is super easy to operate.
And yes, seeing inside your own mouth while brushing is every bit as fascinating as it sounds!
Does the Dyson CameraJet replace flossing?
This is the big one.
Can the Dyson toothbrush really replace flossing?
Dyson has designed CameraJet specifically to precision-floss between your teeth while you brush, using the targeted mouth-rinse jet.
However, I wouldn't interpret that as meaning everyone should throw away their conventional floss immediately and nor would I stope the visit to the hygienist. This is more a case of working together with your oral specialists to get the best oral hygiene you can. It's a partnership.
The technology is designed to tackle interdental plaque and make cleaning between your teeth much easier, particularly for people who simply don't floss consistently.
And let's be honest…
How many of us are actually flossing twice a day? I for one find it so difficult to do effectively.
That's the problem Dyson is trying to solve.
The company says its conical jet is designed to remove plaque while being gentler on gums and enamel than a narrow needle-type jet.
Does the Dyson toothbrush have a camera?
Yes. And this is what makes it completely different from a conventional electric toothbrush.
The CameraJet contains a 100,000-pixel macro camera inside the brush head.
It is designed specifically to look at your teeth and identify interdental spaces.
The camera captures 28 images every second and feeds that information into Dyson's machine-learning system.
You can also see live footage through the MyDyson app.
And don't worry, because I know this is something lots of people will immediately ask, Dyson says the camera images are secured and the system has been designed with privacy in mind.
Is the Dyson CameraJet waterproof?
The CameraJet has been designed for normal bathroom use, but as always with an electronic device, follow Dyson's specific care and cleaning instructions rather than treating it like something you can simply leave submerged in water.
The clever part is the anti-gravity mouth-rinse tank, which means the toothbrush can be used horizontally without the liquid system behaving like a traditional gravity-fed reservoir.
What is Gap Optical Targeting?
This is probably the most impressive bit of technology inside the Dyson toothbrush.
Gap Optical Targeting™ is Dyson's machine-learning system that identifies the spaces between your teeth using the camera.
The camera captures 28 live images per second and the algorithm analyses them to identify, track and predict interdental gaps.
The toothbrush then knows where to direct its mouth-rinse jet.
Dyson says its machine-learning system was trained using 470,000 dental images collected during development.
In other words, you're not just getting a jet of mouthwash sprayed around your mouth.
It's targeted.
Does the Dyson CameraJet remove more plaque?
According to Dyson's testing, yes.
Dyson currently states that CameraJet can remove up to 69% more plaque than market-leading electric toothbrushes, although some launch materials have quoted different figures depending on the comparison and testing methodology.
This is one of those areas where I would always say: look at the testing methodology rather than simply taking a percentage at face value.
But the principle makes sense.
If your toothbrush can physically identify areas you're missing and direct cleaning action towards them, you have the potential to clean areas a conventional toothbrush simply doesn't know you're missing.
Is the Dyson CameraJet gentle on your gums?
This was another question I was really interested in because nobody wants a toothbrush that feels like it's attacking their gums!
Dyson has designed its conical jet specifically with this in mind.
The company says the shape of the jet is designed to remove plaque effectively while being gentler on gums and enamel.
There is also a sensitive brush head, with softer bristles designed for people with sensitive teeth and gums.
The sensitive brush head also has a silicone backing and sonic dampener to make brushing more comfortable.
Does the Dyson toothbrush come with different brush heads?
Yes.
There are standard and sensitive options, with the heads designed specifically for the CameraJet rather than being interchangeable with other Dyson products.
The brush heads use RFID technology, which allows the toothbrush to keep track of usage and alert you when it's time for a replacement.
Dyson says each brush head is designed for around three months of use.
Does the Dyson CameraJet use special toothpaste?
Yes, and this is important.
Because the CameraJet uses a camera to see your teeth, Dyson has developed a low-foaming/non-foaming toothpaste designed to optimise visibility for the camera.
The toothpaste currently comes in flavours including Ginger Mint, Spearmint and Peppermint, with the Peppermint formula designed for sensitive teeth.
Dyson has also developed its own low-foaming mouth rinse.
The reason is very clever: excessive foam could interfere with the camera's ability to see the spaces between your teeth.
Does Dyson mouthwash contain alcohol?
Dyson's low-foaming mouth rinse is alcohol-free.
It has also been designed to work alongside the CameraJet's camera system and is available in flavours including Spearmint and Ginger Mint.
Does Dyson mouthwash contain fluoride?
Yes.
Dyson says its low-foaming mouth rinse contains sodium fluoride, designed to help strengthen tooth enamel when used twice daily.
Can you use normal toothpaste with the Dyson CameraJet?
This is something I'd definitely pay attention to.
The CameraJet has been specifically engineered to work with Dyson's low/non-foaming formulations because the camera needs a clear view of your teeth.
So while the toothbrush is obviously still a toothbrush, if you want to use the camera and targeted flossing technology as intended, Dyson recommends its specially formulated products.
Can you see your teeth while brushing?
Yes!
This is one of the things that makes the CameraJet feel so futuristic.
The camera feeds live information into the MyDyson app, allowing you to see what's happening inside your mouth while you brush.
The app can also provide brushing guidance and feedback.
I'm not sure I've ever looked this closely at my own teeth before.
It's simultaneously fascinating and slightly terrifying!
Does the Dyson CameraJet connect to your phone?
Yes.
The CameraJet connects with the MyDyson app using wireless connectivity, allowing you to access the camera view and brushing guidance.
The app essentially turns your toothbrush into a connected oral-care system rather than just a device you switch on for two minutes. It's super easy to set up and go.
Does the Dyson CameraJet record you?
The camera is there to analyse your mouth and provide the cleaning technology.
Dyson says its camera images are secured and that images are not stored as part of the camera functionality.
This is obviously something I know people will want reassurance about when you're putting a camera inside your mouth!
How much does the Dyson CameraJet cost?
And now we come to the slightly painful bit…
The Dyson CameraJet is £419.99 in the UK.
Yes.
It's an expensive toothbrush.
It's not competing with the £50–£100 electric toothbrush market. This is firmly positioned as a premium piece of Dyson technology.
There are also ongoing costs for replacement brush heads, toothpaste and mouth rinse.
Dyson's current UK pricing lists its non-foaming toothpaste at around £8.49 for 75ml, while a two-pack of sensitive replacement brush heads is currently listed at £25.
So this is definitely an investment but that said I already pay for pretty expensive electric toothbrush heads and also I purchase throw away flossing sticks like they're going out of fashion so actually over the course of time it will become cost neutral.
Is the Dyson CameraJet worth £419.99?
This is the question everyone wants me to answer!
And honestly, I think it depends on what you're looking for.
If you already have a perfectly good electric toothbrush and you're happy brushing and flossing properly every day, you probably don't need a £420 toothbrush.
But if you're someone who struggles to floss, wants a much more guided brushing routine, loves technology and genuinely wants the most advanced oral-care system available, this becomes a very different proposition.
For me, what makes it interesting isn't that it's expensive.
It's why it exists.
Dyson hasn't simply made a £420 toothbrush because they can.
They've identified a genuine weakness in how we clean our teeth, missing those spaces between them, which can cause bacteria to build up which has downstream implications and they've tried to engineer a solution.
Dyson CameraJet vs Oral-B vs Philips Sonicare
If you're wondering whether the Dyson CameraJet is better than an Oral-B or Philips Sonicare, I think we need to look at what you're actually buying.
Oral-B: brilliant established electric toothbrush technology with a huge range of models and price points.
Philips Sonicare: excellent sonic brushing technology and lots of experience in oral care.
Dyson CameraJet: something completely different, combining brushing, a camera, AI gap detection and targeted mouth-rinse flossing.
So this isn't really about saying Dyson is better than Oral-B.
It's about whether you want the additional technology.
And that is where Dyson is doing something genuinely new and revolutionary: Exactly what I would expect from Dyson.
Is the Dyson CameraJet good for sensitive teeth?
There is a dedicated sensitive brush head, which uses softer bristles and is designed to be gentler on gums and enamel.
Dyson has also created a sensitive toothpaste containing potassium nitrate for people with sensitive teeth.
If you have significant dental sensitivity, gum disease or other oral-health concerns, though, I'd always check with your dentist about which brush head and brushing pressure are right for you.
Does the Dyson toothbrush whiten teeth?
The CameraJet isn't a professional teeth-whitening treatment.
However, Dyson says the dual-bristle brush head is designed to lift surface stains as you brush, which can help your teeth look cleaner and brighter.
So think removing surface staining, rather than bleaching your teeth.
How often do you need to replace the Dyson toothbrush head?
Dyson says the brush heads are engineered for approximately three months' use. This in my experience is pretty standard for an electric toothbrush.
The RFID system tracks usage and the toothbrush can alert you when the head needs replacing.
Is the Dyson CameraJet messy?
This is one thing I'm definitely going to be testing more as I spend more time with it. My experience so far is there are no leaks and my hand isn't permanently soaked when using it which is a big tick in the box.
You're combining brushing with a targeted mouth-rinse jet, so obviously this isn't going to behave exactly like a traditional electric toothbrush.
Dyson has engineered the fluid system very carefully, including its anti-gravity tank and conical jet, but this is still a new way of brushing.
And let's face it anything involving water and a bathroom needs a tiny bit of getting used to!
Who is the Dyson CameraJet actually for?
I'd say it's particularly interesting if you:
- Struggle to floss regularly
- Want better interdental cleaning
- Love clever technology
- Want detailed feedback on your brushing
- Have invested in other Dyson beauty or technology products
- Love premium design
- Want to understand exactly how you're brushing
- Are a complete gadget person
- Or simply want to see what happens when Dyson applies its engineering brain to something completely new!
What are my hones first impressions of the Dyson CameraJet?
I've seen plenty of new products launch over the years, but occasionally something comes along that genuinely makes you stop and think.
The Dyson CameraJet was one of those products for me.
Standing in Paris and watching this tiny camera identify the spaces between someone's teeth and then automatically direct a jet of mouth rinse exactly where it was needed was honestly incredible.
And then, of course, there's the fact that James Dyson was there presenting it himself.
I love that.
There is something quite wonderful about seeing the person behind a brand still so involved in the engineering and innovation behind a product.
Will everyone need a £419.99 toothbrush?
Absolutely not.
But that's not really the point.
Dyson has taken one of the most ordinary things we all do twice a day and asked how technology could make it better.
The Dyson CameraJet doesn't feel like Dyson has simply put its name on an electric toothbrush.
It feels like Dyson has looked at the toothbrush itself and thought: we can completely reinvent this.
And after seeing what it can do in Paris, and trialing it for a few days, I cannot wait to properly put the new Dyson CameraJet toothbrush through its paces.
Because if this is the beginning of Dyson's journey into oral care, I have a feeling our bathroom cabinets are about to look very, very different.
