The No Make Up Selfie Debate for Cancer Research

Hey everyone, so something a little bit different from me today. I've decided to write about this because quite frankly, it's quite a controversial topic but it needs discussing. If you don't know what the no make up selfie is, a lot of people last night and the night before were posting photographs of them with no make up on in order to raise awareness of cancer, perfect I say. Here's what I think about it...

Nasty statuses - I saw some horrible statuses from boys: 'girls who were 10/10 have suddenly just dropped to 5/10', 'I've seen how ugly some girls really are', 'congratulations, you donated £3 to cancer research and posted about it on Facebook, now everyone knows what a great person you are' and then out came the nasty girls saying things like: 'put your ugly, pasty faces away, we don't want to see them'. Firstly, the people who were writing things like this are quite frankly, vile and clearly have issues of their own, we know that boys will be boys and that girls can be extremely nasty, but for a lot of girls, taking make up off in the first place is a hard thing to do. You may laugh at this, but it's the truth, girls don't always like to be seen looking bare, and to put your bare face to the nasty internet is quite scary, so I think this whole no make up selfie thing to begin with, has done a good job of raising girls self esteem, as so many girls look absolutely beautiful without make up on.

'How does taking a selfie raise awareness or money for charity?' - Then comes another debate, how does taking a selfie actually raise awareness or money for charity? A lot of people were saying things like 'go out and do something for charity rather than sitting and taking a selfie' and so many people were tweeting and writing statuses asking how does a selfie raise money? However, what these people failed to realise is that by moaning about it or even by asking the question, they were actually discussing the topic and therefore, making the topic go viral, it's simple PR, talk = publicity and we want this to go viral and it has, the more people that mentioned it, the more people that moaned about it, meant that more people donated and more people went out and did it! Hence why I am writing this post now. I do agree that to begin with, a few girls did just take a selfie and didn't mention donating, however, many girls did say 'check your boobs girls' and I did even see some girls upload photographs of how to check for symptoms of breast cancer, both me and my flat mate checked our breasts last night in the shower, something we would not have done before hand. Here is a great example below from Jamie Hartley, he wouldn't have made the donation had he not seen it all over Facebook all day.

So how has this worked? - To be honest, when I saw all the nasty statuses, I thought that girls would soon stop putting up the selfies, they'd kind of been bullied into a corner by people who didn't understand that it was raising awareness, I saw one person explain that he already knew that cancer was a bad thing, he didn't need a selfie to tell him that, but sometimes we just need things putting back into the forefront of our mind and as Jamie said, this did make him (and many others) who wouldn't have ordinarily, pick up their phones and donate.

So here are a few girls looking absolutely gorgeous, naturally, on my news feed:

Bethany Hopps

Perese Haye

Sinead Flanagan

Hannah Coop

Charlotte Louise Spencer

Grace Johnson

Christie Hutchings and George Wainwright - a personal favourite, Christie wears no make up and George wears make up. Great team effort.

The result? - It was reported today that Cancer Research saw a rise in donations and received 800,000 more donations in just 24 hours, mainly via text. In these 24 hours, a reported 1million pounds has been raised by these selfies/awareness. All I want to say is a massive well done, it is so nice to see girls empowering eachother and helping eachother out and working together (even though they are just sending a quick text and taking a selfie) to raise awareness, it really does show, every little helps and it only takes one tiny gesture, to make such a huge difference. It may seem like a tiny thing, a selfie and one donation, but when you think how many girls have done this, it's clearly worked. It's nice to see guys getting involved now too.

Let's not stop now, upload your no make up selfie and text BEAT to 70099 to donate £3 - I say we aim for another million, in fact, why not start raising money for a charity of your choice - do something great today. Taking our make up off and publishing it to the whole world and texting a number to raise money, is NOTHING compared to what people fighting cancer and other horrible diseases go through every day. Together we can beat cancer and all of the other dreadful diseases in the world! Let's do this. The power of social media!

Ladies, educate yourselves ^

Lots of love, Em

  1. YES! Such a good post, I completely agree. I was a bit sceptical when they first appeared but I wouldn't have donated had I not been nominated to do it by my friend! And clearly it's working with the amount of money which has been raised!

  2. such a good post! i completely agree! it was making me so angry seeing boys post things telling the girls they looked ugly, but it made me even more angry that girls were ganging up on them as well. I was worried people would stop posting their selfies, but in fact I think it made more people do it to fight back.

through uneducated people moaning about seeing these no make up selfies, i think it brought more attention to the debate, which is raising awareness = the whole point of the idea!! You're right, I wouldn't have donated if it wasn't for these selfies.. and the donation figures speak for themselves.

I was going to write a post about this, but it wouldn't top yours. There's nothing left unsaid on this post.. such a good one Em!

  3. Couldn't agree more! Far too many people have been too quick to slate the idea because they don't understand "raising awareness", and as for the bitchy men I've seen on my timeline commenting on how ugly the girls are it's just disgusting! The boy who said about "Movember" makes a good point too! Great post! :) x

    1. They thought raising awareness had to be donating money but actually, its the initial selfies which made people start donating so it clearly worked! x

  4. I loved this! It's so irritating to me that people bash other people for not wearing makeup- I probably don't wear makeup 2 or 3 days a week and I love it! It's just time consuming and difficult to get up in the morning some days! As for the cancer awareness, I'm all for that and more and more women are being saved because of the PR we're unknowingly doing! Great job!

  5. Completely agree with what you've said! Seen some horrible things said about some girls and its disgusting! Whether people like it or not, if people hadn't posted these pictures, the majority of people wouldn't have donated so it has definitely been worth while.

  6. Great post! I agree with you it has created awareness and people that slate it are making it more aware themselves by talking about it. You look beautiful without make up!

  8. Great post - I see people grumbling on my Facebook feed too, but it was the usual boring culprits that moan or disagree with the majority just for a reaction. Considering hefty donations were received yesterday for this well deserving cause I can't see how anyone can be negative.

& how beautiful are girls without any of that make up that we spend so many hours talking/writing and lusting after!

  9. I am part of the "nomakeupselfie" I did the picture and sent the text to donate £3. It worked to raise money because I also persuaded others to do the same. I also think the whole no makeup thing will makeup most girls more confident without makeup because most people will say " you don't need makeup" which is true xx (if that makes sense) xxx

  11. I think its a great campaign. I dont think they should even be a debate, anyone who thinks otherwise is down right stupid to be frank. Its raising money for cancer research. 1 in 3 get cancer. Thousands of those people posting nasty comments or negative statuses, will unfortunately one day, face the face that they have cancer and they won’t complain then about this campaign will they? If you dont agree with the campaign, would you accept money raised from it, to better yourself or a family member, god forbid they got cancer? Thats something to think about.

  12. Fantastic post! I completely agree with everything you've said. The campaign has obviously worked as they received over one million pounds in donations after just 24 hours! Amazing - especially to say Cancer Research didn't even start the campaign! xo

  17. I also did a selfie and donated to Cancer Research UK. I thought it was a brilliant idea to raise awareness and for over £1m to be donated in 24 hours the campaign did exactly as it was supposed to! Although I was really nervous about uploading a photo without my make-up haha!! In fact, out of the selfies I have seen people look no different without their make-up and still look beautiful :) xx

  19. Hi Hun!
So glad you did this post, as all the drama on FB has been driving me crazy. One girl I know was slating cancer research for coming up with such a vain but very impressive marketing scheme, which is just going to boost ego's and not do anything. I have seen loads of girls commenting on other girls pictures saying how lovely they look, and surely its better for us to be sticking together for something good than bitching about eachother and being horrible. It has raised sooo much money & I wish these people would just chill out about it :(

    great post!

  22. People just love to whinge don't they, even when something makes perfect sense; people talking about it =increased awareness=more money to help get rid of the utter s**t that is cancer.
Great post about it, I'm going to send it to every negative Nelly I see bitching on FB :o)

  24. This annoyed me as well, I had some rude guy on facebook be horrible about it all which made me want to post my selfie even more! I think the point of this no make-up selfie is relevant, people who have undergone treatment for cancer loose their confidence, some girls wear make-up to help with their confidence. It's not just a no make up selfie, it's about feeling good about yourself in different situations and spreading the word. Nice post Em, glad you wrote it. Some people are just heartless and it definitely raised a lot of awareness, over £8M worth :)
